Throwing It Back

In the past year, I feel like I haven't been as invested or interested in trends. Instead, I find myself wanting to simplify the dressing process, and go back to the basics. Lately, so many of the old school sneakers that we grew up wearing have been having a revival (like Adidas Stan Smiths, Nike Cortez, etc). I'm really into this sneaker revolution (re-revolution?) because in my mind, it harkens back to a simpler time. This spring, Famous Footwear is carrying a selection of throwback shoes and asked me to style a pair. I picked out some Vans high tops, which have been so ubiquitous lately.

I actually didn't notice that this style of Vans was EVERYWHERE until my husband pointed it out and told me that he wanted a pair. Now he has 3 pairs! Ok he actually only asked for the classic black ones with the white stripe, but I thought that was a bit bland, so I bought him a couple of different pairs in more exciting color/fabrications (one all-leather in a nudish pink and one in grey suede). I think we are getting to that age where the nostalgia of the shoe makes us feel a little bit young again. And it's just so easy to throw them on and NGAF the way we did back in the day. In high school, I always gravitated towards Vans sneakers since they were so easily paired with any kind of outfit. My husband was the same. Funny fact: we actually went to the same high school and were only a year apart in school but never met until after college. He always wistfully ruminates about how different our lives could've been if we had met back then.

Style tip: high-top sneakers can really shorten the leg, so pairing with a high-waisted pant is a good idea! I always like to cuff my pants and show a little bit of ankle. Except when it's really cold. Then I roll them back down.

Outfit details: Striped boatneck tee and black high-waisted jeans, Gap. Suede jacket, Mango. High Top Ward Vans, Famous Footwear. Joan crossbody bag, See by Chloe.

Thank you to Famous Footwear for kindly sponsoring this post. All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.

Be There With Bells On

Though this look is decidedly summery, two trends that will definitely still be going strong into fall are bell sleeves and crop kick jeans. I'm not super fond of bell sleeves personally (this top was just too pretty to pass up on, and on sale!), since I'm always worried about accidentally dipping them into food or whatever (I'm messy!), but the crop kick is definitely a trend I can get behind. The silhouette is just super fresh right now--a cropped leg with just a slight flare at the hems. Surprisingly, I found this pair at the Gap. Not that it's surprising that the retailer best known for basics has such an extensive denim selection, but I was surprised that they're carrying some of the more fashion-forward styles and trendier cuts ahead of many other retailers! Awesome possum, Gap.

Winter Heat Wave

This past weekend we made the drive out to Malibu to get some bone-in ribeye from our favorite steak restaurant, Mastro's. We've gone to the Beverly Hills location before (which is super dark and kind of cramped) but figured we would check out the ambiance at the Ocean Club location which we've always driven past whenever we drive up Pacific Coast Highway. I thought that there might be a chilly breeze by the ocean and brought along a chunky sweater, but the weather was unseasonably warm. So, we spent some time by the beach watching surfers catch some waves.

I kept my outfit very simple by reaching for the classics that never let me down. I haven't been shopping much lately so sometimes it's hard to come up with a new outfit without a particular piece to build around. I've had this denim shirt from Madewell forever and it still gets a lot of love from me. Also my favorite black skinnies from Gap, which considering that I probably have at least 5 pairs of black skinny jeans, is kind of saying something. And if I ever feel like my outfit is a bit too plain, topping it off with a wool fedora usually does the trick. I also forgot about these nude ballerina flats ever since my Chicago trip where they hurt my feet kinda badly. But now I've got some shoe rub tape on them and they are good to go again!

My favorite steak!! We also tried the lobster mashed potatoes for the first time, which a lot of people rave about, but I thought it was just ok.
