A Touch of Color

In today's look, I'm wearing my favorite black jeans, favorite white blouse, favorite ankle boots (at the moment), and favorite moto jacket! You can't go wrong with an outfit built of great basics, but as chic as black and white are as a color combination, I don't feel like quite myself without a bit of color. Normally my M.O would be to throw on a colored bag, but I've been loving my Céline mini belt bag way too much lately. Ironically, black looks so good with nearly every color, but, in my opinion, looks a bit dull when paired with itself. Adding an element with a great print always works to liven things up quickly. I added a floral touch to my outfit by using a poncho/shawl thing that I got from Urban Outfitters as a scarf. A scarf is perfect for the weather lately, but when it's too hot, a small colorful accessory such as a bag charm or a scarf tied to the bag can work wonders too.

Fall Colors

LA is a city best known for palm trees and not, unfortunately, trees that give off a vibrant and dazzling display of autumnal colors each fall. A trip to the Northeast in the fall (I'm thinking Maine or New Hampshire or someplace along those lines) to see some REAL autumn foliage is definitely on my bucket list. Still, I would typically spy at least a few neighborhoods with some decent deciduous trees while driving around this time of year, often stopping to take some pictures. This year I haven't noticed too many, or maybe I just haven't been driving around as much, but I nevertheless find myself gravitating towards fall colors in my wardrobe choices. Banana Republic sent me this top and boots in such perfect fall-ready colors, so here I am in an outfit of varying shades of brown, green, and orange. It's definitely one of my favorite color palettes, and there's no better time of year to be wearing it!

The Tie-Neck Blouse

It's all about the neck this season (think choker tops, choker necklaces, thin scarves, etc.) and one of my favorite neck trends is the tie-neck blouse. It's such a feminine and chic take on a staple that is often decidedly menswearish and although the style is currently trending, it's also a very timeless and classic style. It's definitely not the last one you'll be seeing me wear here on the blog. I love the dot-print on this one, which is fun yet subdued enough to be appropriate for workwear. I paired the top with some mom jeans, but went kind of fancy on the shoes--I rarely ever wear pumps, especially if they don't have some sort of ankle-strap, because I feel like they are either pinching my toes or sliding off my heels. Enter: the "12-hour pump" from Banana. With such a lofty name like that, I had to give them a go! They may very well be the most comfortable pair of pumps I own yet. At any rate, plum is always such a beautiful color for Fall/Winter. Also, this bag which I purchased from Banana Republic in the spring remains one of my favorites and is transitioning seamlessly into fall.

Fall For Crop Kick

We're just two days out from the autumn equinox, which means that boot-wearing season is officially upon us. The weather is still pretty warm here in LA, but we have been seeing some overcast skies here and there, which I'm taking as a cue to break out some ankle boots. I just got this pair from Banana Republic, and I'm totally loving the sleek angles. They're filling a hole in my wardrobe that I didn't even know existed--quite a bit more polished than what I am used to. I definitely anticipate that I'll be reaching for these a ton this season. I've been eager to try out the combination of ankle boots with a pair of crop kick jeans, as it's been mostly too warm to do so all summer. Tuck a shirt (a modal tee like this one always feels luxurious, and I am a sucker for a little ruffle action) into the jeans and I am totally feeling this easy outfit formula for fall!

Perfect Summer Jeans

Summer is officially here and the southwestern United States has already been graced with it's first heat wave of the season (we actually had some really hot days back in February so I can't even say it was the first one of the year). Just last week, people were complaining about the June Gloom, but I always say that June Gloom is the best because it means that it's not blazing hot. So now here we are; no more gloom in sight, in the midst of some record-breaking temperatures, our forests are on fire, and I'm wearing jeans of all things.

Since I consider these to be battle-tested now, I can say with confidence that these boyfriend jeans are the ideal jean for summer. The lightweight denim and the loose boyfriend-cut allow for maximum airflow, while providing a layer of protection between my sweaty thighs and anything they might sit on and leave embarrassing sweat marks behind on...erm, that's not just me, right?? I got the regular inseam which was a bit too long on me so I cut the hems off. Unfinished hems are totally in style, anyway! Without a cuff, the fit is even looser, so I wouldn't want to pair them with anything too big on top. This lightweight top with ruffles at the shoulders is the perfect feminine counterpoint to the baggy bottoms. And this straw boater hat--I've been on the hunt for one for a while, and found a great affordable version from American Eagle! So excited to be topping off my outfits with this hat this summer, and the wide-brim provides awesome protection for my stereotypical Asian, sun-hating face.

Safari Vibes

It's been at least a decade since I've worn a pair of flared jeans. That was all anyone wore back then, but now we are super spoiled for choice with so many different cuts of denim in vogue. The cool thing about today's flares is that they tend to be cut a few inches longer so that they can be worn with heels for a more polished, figure-elongating effect. While this poses a bit more of a fit and style challenge, the overall effect is much more chic than the boot-cut jeans of yesteryear. Thankfully Banana Republic carries the majority of its denim styles in petite sizes as well, but even then you can see that there is no way I'd be able to wear these jeans with flats unless I wanted the hems dragging everywhere (and at 5'4", I barely qualify into the petite category). A pair of heels is definitely requisite when it comes to wearing today's flares.

Nevertheless, despite the more polished vibe of flared pants these days, I still dig the more free-spirited stylings of the original bell-bottom jeans circa the 1970s. I wouldn't go so far as to wear them with a furry coat and some round John Lennon-style sunglasses, but I styled them with my flowingest, most bohemian blouse from Free People and a tan fedora for that vaguely Penny Lane vibe. Paired with a beige safari jacket, the overall color palette of muted tans and a soft warm coral is a super pretty combination for spring.
