Joshua Tree, California, USA

Desert Vibes

Took another trip out to Joshua Tree recently, and the second visit was possibly even more magical than the first. LA is definitely lucky to be just a short two-hour drive from this special place. It often gets quite chilly during winter in the high desert, even snowing sometimes (still preferable to a desert summer in my opinion--except that the Milky Way is best viewed during the summer) but we were blessed with perfect, cool weather. We stayed in a cute little Airbnb cabin on rural land with jackrabbits and roadrunners and this glorious Joshua Tree right in front. At night we took advantage of the prime view of the stars and tried shooting some star trails!

Long cardigan, Sole Society (sold out). Denim camp shirt, Madewell (old). White tank top, Fabletics. Olive fedora, H&M. Black skinny jeans, Gap. El Paso ankle boot, Minnetonka.

Fresh Kicks: Nike Air Max Thea

nike air max thea, casual outfit, jeans, jeans with nikes
I have a few pairs of Nike gym shoes but wanted a pair I could dedicate exclusively to casual-wear. Like the Roshe and the Juvenate, the Air Max Thea is a technically a "lifestyle" shoe (despite resembling running shoes, they are in fact casual sneakers). I had previously purchased a pair of black Nike Frees hoping they would be able to double as casual shoes, but found them to be a bit too clunky and wide (I have the 2013 5.0 style). I love how the Air Max Thea has a narrower profile and a thick sole with the signature pocket of air--height-boosting and super comfortable! Very happy with this purchase and looking forward to wearing them while running errands or traveling or any other time I just want my feet to be super comfy.

Air Max Thea, Nike. Grey muscle tee, Babakul. Coated Florence Instasculpt jeans, DL1961 (similar here and here). Western-tipped leather belt, Urban Outfitters. Two-toned bouclé cardigan, Zara. Jet set multifunction tote bag, Michael by Michael Kors. Grey scarf, H&M (on sale!)

Notes about the Air Max Thea:
This style is known to run small, but I ended up getting my usual size for Nikes which is a full size bigger than my normal size. I like a roomier fit for sneakers/athletic shoes so that I can slip my feet in and out easily without having to redo the laces. A lot of reviewers have complained about these shoes hurting their feet, but so far I haven't experienced any discomfort. The back of the shoe is pretty stiff (which I really like actually) and I could see how it could potentially be uncomfortable if the shoe didn't fit right, but I think that is likely more of a fit issue.

Snow Day

TNA Griffith parka and Wilfred Haus scarf, Aritzia. Hyperwarm tights, Nike. Short duck boots, Sorel. Socks, Madewell.

The warmer temps and drought of the past few years has meant little to no snow falling on the mountains surrounding Los Angeles. So, after last week's back-to-back rainstorms, I jumped at the chance to check out the first good snow season in years. We drove up past Mountain High resort in the San Gabriel mountains and found a beautiful picnic area covered in two feet of snow. It was all fresh and untouched and so serene, with little kids all bundled up and sledding around like a scene from a Christmas movie. So much fun!

Also exciting was getting the chance to test out the parka I purchased recently from Aritzia. When it comes to dressing for cold weather, I can't help but trust Canadian brands for obvious reasons. This jacket is a 3-in-1, with an inner jacket that can be removed or worn alone in warmer weather. I figured a transitional jacket would be more useful in the Southern California climate than a warmer parka. It surpassed my expectations; well-made with great construction details, and water-resistant as well. For temperatures in the 30s, it held up really well. One of my best clothing purchases so far this winter!

Bundled Up

Bouclé cardigan, Zara. Double-sided plaid blanket scarf, Zara (old, similar here). Striped tee, Gap. Olive-green pleated trousers, Queenshop. Fringed leather crossbody, Mango. Lace-up ankle boots, Urban Outfitters (old).

I'm absolutely loving the chilly winter we're having, since California's last two winters were pretty much non-existent. It's almost a bit of a sartorial challenge for me to get dressed for cooler temperatures and so far it's been awesome. I'm dusting off a lot of clothes that I haven't worn in ages as well as taking the weather change (and the proliferation of post-holiday sales) as an opportunity to refresh my wardrobe with a few new items, which I'll hopefully be sharing soon in some future posts. Right now my favorite recent purchase is this fringed saddle bag I got from Mango during Christmas sales, so don't be surprised if you see it popping up here a lot!

Holiday Shine

Camel sherpa coat, c/o Old Navy. Printed swing dress, c/o Old Navy. Textured smoking flats, c/o Old Navy. Concho chain belt, Forever 21. Sparkle tights, Pretty Polly. Bejeweled crossbody purse, Urban Outfitters (old).

I'm absolutely loving the cold (by our standards) weather we've been having in Southern California lately, but wearing jeans and a sweater can get old pretty fast. A dress with tights is always a fun alternative, especially around the holidays, which is what I was thinking on this particular day. Since I was feeling festive, I decided to wear my sparkly tights from Pretty Polly and a sparkly purse too! I topped off the look with a warm fuzzy teddy bear coat from Old Navy, easily one of my favorite items from their winter range.

Winter Formal

Metallic maxi dress, BCBGeneration (old). Tuxedo jacket, Silence + Noise. Isla sandals, French Connection.

A bit of metallic always feels right around the holidays and I find myself drawn to dramatic full-length styles as well, when I would typically find them a bit too fussy. The added length does help ward off the cold a bit. I wore this look to a wedding at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu which was actually pretty freezing (by California standards). I was kind of wishing I had worn a heavier coat, but I loved the way the dress looked with a tuxedo jacket!

Cold-weather Comfort

Marled jogger pants, c/o Old Navy. Textured knit sweater, c/o Old Navy (on sale!) High-top sneakers, c/o Old Navy (sold out). Frost-free fleece-lined vest, c/o Old Navy. Pom pom fair-isle beanie, Old Navy (sold out online).

Working from home means I spend a good chunk of my life lounging around in sweatpants, but never until now had I let them see the light of day. However, it's become so trendy to wear "fancy sweatpants" every where in recent years, that I found myself gravitating towards this pair of joggers from Old Navy and thought I'd give the trend a try. I went for a petite size (which they only carry online) since an ankle-grazing length always looks a bit more polished, in my opinion. And since the pants were so comfortable, I decided to go all out with other comfortable pieces as well: a fleece-lined puffer vest and high-top sneakers (I could never get on board with the whole sweatpants with heels thing). And then added some touches of fair-isle print to keep the look cute.

What do you think about wearing sweatpants outside of the home? My boyfriend and all of his friends do it, but I haven't seen too many girls rocking them despite always seeing them in stores. Have you done it/would you?
